"I Have To..." vs. "I Get To"

In thinking about wellness, Dr. Bradley discussed how a simple shift in mindset from "I have to" to "I get to" can make a meaningful difference in how we approach our daily lives, especially when managing something like Parkinson's. When we say "I have to", it often feels like a burden or obligation, but reframing it as "I get to" transforms the task into an opportunity. 

Highlights from the discussion with Dr. Bradley McDaniel's: 

 1. Wellness is more than the absence of illness - it's about thriving and performing at your best by focusing on what makes you feel good. 

2. Social prescriptions are as valuable as medical ones - just like pharmacies provide medication, society can "prescribe" activities that fulfill the need for social connection, such as support groups. 

3. Purpose gives strength - as Neitzsche said, "When a person has a 'why', they can handle any 'how'."

4. Self-care is essential - you can't help others if you don't take care of yourself first.

5. Exercise should be enjoyable - the best form of exercise is one you find fun and are more likely to stick with. 

6. Purpose evolves -  life changes, like a Parkinson's diagnosis, may shift your purpose, but it's never gone. It can be readjusted to new roles, like offering support to others with PD.
